KL hop On Hop Off

KL hop On Hop Off

Kuala Lumpur Railway Station (2♦)

Kuala Lumpur Railway Station is an almost fairytale Moorish-style building to the southeast of the National Mosque. Located along Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin (previously known as Victory Avenue), it used to be KL’s main railway hub until 2001 when Kuala Lumpur Sentral took over much of its role.

Adopting a mixture of Eastern and Western styles, it was designed by A.B. Hubbock in 1910. Opposite stands the Malaya Railway Administration Building, also designed by Hubbock in 1917. Beneath the Islamic exterior, the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station resembles a typical glass and iron Victorian-era English railway building.

The Kuala Lumpur Railway Station was Kuala Lumpur’s third railway station – the first was located along Jalan Cheng Lok while the second was set at the present site. The second station was demolished to make way for the present-day site.

It used to house the offices of the Federated Malay States Railways, but now its primary function is that of the administrative head office of the Keretapi Tanah Melayu. Built using convict labour, there is a hotel (the Heritage Station Hotel) on the first floor and inside is a restaurant plus several souvenir stalls.

The building is a favourite sightseeing attraction in the city due to its gorgeous façade – the open-plan Renaissance-like building’s spacious verandas with arched colonnades make for beautiful photo opportunities.

Fun fact: when the Kuala Lumpur Railway station was first erected, construction was delayed as its rooftop design did not meet British railway specifications. It had to be able to support snow a metre deep – pretty funny when you factor in KL’s year-round hot and humid weather.

Petaling Street (3♠)

Back in the olden days when Malaysia was still known as ‘Tanah Melayu’ or Malaya, the Chinese had come to this country to work at the tin mines. However, during the Selangor Civil War, the tin mines were temporarily abandoned. The Chinese returned after the war, only to find the mines flooded. Yap Ah Loy, an influential Chinese figure back then, had opened a tapioca mill on Petaling Street in his bid to persuade the Chinese to stay on. To this day, Petaling Street is sometimes called ‘Chee Cheong Kai’, meaning ‘Starch Factory Street’ in Cantonese, referring to its history as the centre for the production of tapioca flour back then.

Since then, Petaling Street has been given a facelift. Gone are the patchy roads, broken pavements and colourful umbrellas attached to wooden pushcarts lining the street on both sides. A green awning covers the length of the street, acting as a roof to shield vendors and shoppers from the heat and the rain. An Oriental-style archway with the words ‘Jalan Petaling/Petaling Street’ spelled out in gold letters greets visitors at its main entrance.

Petaling Street is chock-full of shops and stalls selling goods and food. A signboard warning against the sale of imitation goods provides an interesting – even ironic – contrast as the whole street is practically littered with fake branded items. Handbags, watches, trainers, clothing – you name it, they’ve got it. Louis Vuitton sits side-by-side with Rolex, and you can sometimes get the latest cinematic releases at less than RM 10 each. For shoppers on a tight budget or those looking for cheap and cheerful ‘branded’ goods, Petaling Street will be their first stop as it offers not just variety but also value for money as the prices can be further whittled down through hard bargaining.

Petaling Street is also filled with opportunities to sample a delightful array of local cuisine. Chinese and seafood restaurants can be found at every corner, and stalls selling all kinds of snacks are stretched along the street, resulting in an interesting mixture of aroma filling the air that is quite hard to resist. The best thing about them is that most of them are open until very late at night, with some even staying open until four to five in the morning. For a highly-recommended list of food to try in and around Petaling Street, take a look at our Chinatown Dining section.

Masjid Jamek (3♥)

Built in 1909, Jamek Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  It is located at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak River and was designed by Arthur Benison Hubback.

The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sir Alaeddin Sulaiman Shah officially opened the mosque in 1909, two years after construction was completed. The mosque was built on the first Malay burial ground in the city. Before the national mosque, Masjid Negara, was opened in 1965, Masjid Jamek served as Kuala Lumpur's main mosque. The architect was Arthur Benison Hubback.

The mosque has a Moorish, Indo-Saracenic or Mughal architecture.  Across the Gombak River stands the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, a building that was designed by the same architect and shares a similar style.

Nearby is the Masjid Jamek LRT station that is served by the Kelana Jaya Line, Sri Petaling Line and Ampang Line. The station is located between Chinatown and Little India; Dataran Merdeka is also nearby.

Genting Highland (3♣)

Genting Highlands otherwise known as Resorts World Genting, is a hill resort in Malaysia developed by Genting Group.

The hill resort is at an average elevation of 1,740 metres (5,710 ft) within the Titiwangsa Mountains on the border between the states of Pahang and Selangor of Malaysia. Resorts World Genting is operated by Genting Malaysia Berhad (formerly known as Resorts World Bhd), which also operates Awana chain of resorts & hotels. It is accessible by car from Kuala Lumpur in one hour, or also accessible by a cable car called Genting Skyway (3.38 kilometres (2.10 mi)) which at its opening was the world's fastest and South East Asia's longest gondola lift.

The idea of a hill resort located near Kuala Lumpur occurred to Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong during a business trip to the Cameron Highlands in 1964. He mooted this idea while enjoying the fresh and crisp air from the balcony of his hotel room. A private company called Genting Highlands Berhad was set up on 27 April 1965, with the late Tan Sri Haji Mohammed Noah bin Omar, Tan Sri Lim successfully obtained approval for the alienation of 12,000 acres (4,900 ha) and 2,800 acres (1,100 ha) of land from the Pahang and Selangor State Government respectively between the years 1965 and 1970. An anomaly happened during the obtaining of the land approvals. While the Pahang state government swiftly approved a freehold lease, the Selangor state reluctantly approved a 99-year lease. As a result, Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong met the then Menteri Besar of Selangor, Dato Harun Idris and told him that a freehold lease would be more feasible than a 99-year lease. Finally, the Selangor state government agreed to grant a freehold lease.

On 18 August 1965, a technical and construction team began the four-year task to complete the access road from Genting Sempah to the peak of Gunung Ulu Kali. On 31 March 1969, the late YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s first Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for the company’s pioneer hotel, marking the completion of the access road to Genting Highlands Resort. The Prime Minister was impressed that the private sector, without the assistance of the Government, could develop a mountain resort for the enjoyment of all Malaysians; subsequently a gaming licence was suggested to help accelerate the development of this remote area.

In 1971, the first hotel at Genting Highlands was successfully completed and was named Highlands Hotel (now renamed Theme Park Hotel). The Genting Highlands Resort continued to expand since the opening of the first hotel in 1971. Development of the area continued with care taken to ensure the maintenance of the natural beauty of the rainforest of the region. In 1997, Genting Highlands Resort added the Genting Skyway cable car system that provides a 3.38 kilometres (2.10 mi) transport to the hilltop. Genting Skyway is also recognised as the "World's Fastest Mono Cable Car System" with a maximum speed of 21.6 kilometres per hour (13.4 mph) and the "Longest Cable Car in Malaysia and Southeast Asia maybe".

In 2013, Genting announced a new 1,300 room hotel expansion to the current First World Hotel, a new 10,000 seat arena and reconverting the current theme park to RM1 billion 20th Century Fox World theme park.

Royal Selangor Club (3♦)

The Royal Selangor Club is a club for socializing in Kuala Lumpur. It is situated conveniently beside the famous landmark in Kuala Lumpur, the Merdeka Square, Kuala Lumpur. The club is accessible via Jalan Raja and is sometimes the host for certain matches from the Cricket World Cup.

The Royal Selangor Club has been around for more than 100 years. Most of its early records of its history were gone during the Japanese occupation from 1942 to 1945. Some of its records were also missing from a fire back in 1970. The club was founded in 1884 and was initially named the Selangor Club. It served as a meeting place for high ranked and educated members of the British colonial society. The club went over a facelift back in 1910 when Arthur Benison Hubback redesigned the club. Over the years, the membership has increased as many distinguished Malaysian civil servants start to join the club

Back in 1900s, the club was also used as a hall for theatrical performances as there were no available halls back then. Ever since the beginning, the Royal Selangor Club has been the host for many sporting events especially cricket. It is from the Long Bar there sporting events can be viewed from. Other attraction near the club is none other than Merdeka Square where declaration of independence took place back in 1957.

Bukit Jalil National Stadium (4♠)
